Author

Emma Bragdon, PhD is Director of the Foundation for Energy Therapies. Since 2001, she has been traveling to Brazil to research Spiritism and Spiritist psychiatric hospitals. Her books and films on Spiritism are sought after internationally.  She is also a highly respected guide and patient advocate for individuals traveling to visit John of God and/or view Spiritist Psychiatric Hospitals.

"Dr. Bragdon is uniquely positioned to provide the authentic voice to this important and emerging tradition which offers the possibility of a revolution in the treatment of mental illness.”

–Marc Micozzi, MD, PhD. is the founding director of the Policy Institute for Integrative Medicine in Washington, D.C. He is also the author and editor of “Fundamentals of Complementary & Alternative Medicine”.

Since 2001 she has written 4 books on Spiritism:

“Spiritual Alliances: Discovering the Roots of Health at the Casa de Dom Inácio” reveals John of God’s work in Brazil, interviews of physicians who visited him, and dialogues with patients healed by him.

“Kardec’s Spiritism: A Home for Healing and Spiritual Evolution”, which describes the offerings of many Spiritist Centers in Brazil.

More recently she edited a unique collection of essays written by Brazilian physicians and psychologists about the Spiritist treatment in Spiritist Psychiatric Hospitals in Brazil, titled “Spiritism and Mental Health” to assist health professionals in recognizing the positive potential of Spiritist treatments, and reveal the practicalities of how they work.

“A brilliant explanation of Spiritist practice in Brazil! … a tour de force in introducing consciousness and spirituality to psychiatric treatment. I highly recommend this book for those wishing to practice truly holistic medicine.”

--John L. Turner, M.D., (Neurosurgeon) author of Medicine, Miracles and Manifestations: A Doctor’s Journey Through the Wolds of Divine Intervention, Near-Death Experiences, and Universal Energy

This more academic reference book was followed by the current resource book for those suffering from mental disturbance and extreme states as well as the health providers who care for them “Resources for Extraordinary Healing: Schizophrenia, Bipolar and Other Serious Mental Illnesses”.

In order to bring Spiritism more alive to general audiences, and all ages, Dr. Bragdon co-produced two 30-minute documentary films:

The film about John of God’s work is titled I Do Not Heal, God is the One Who Heals".

The film on Spiritism in Brazil and the USA and Spiritist Psychiatric Hospitals is titled Spiritism: Bridging Spirituality and Health".

These can be viewed on-line for a small fee at Amazon.com’s “Video on Demand”.  They are excellent films for educational venues as well as arm-chair travel.

Prior to 2001 Dr. Bragdon was well-known for her two books on the topic of spiritual crises.  Her first book, “A Sourcebook for Helping People in Spiritual Emergency” differentiated spiritual crises from mental pathology to help health providers and patients choose the appropriate “treatment” and diagnosis in cases of phenomena of spiritual awakening.  Her second book, “The Call of Spiritual Emergency”, is full of stories of spiritual awakenings from the perspective of everyday people who experienced them.

Dr. Bragdon resides in Vermont, USA, and Brazil.  She is available for consulting individuals and organizations by telephone, skype or email.  Her website has details: www.EmmaBragdon.com.  See this website for information on trips offered to Brazil, as well.

When not working, Emma enjoys family, friends, hiking, swimming, cooking, gardening and kayaking.
